Dr. Yu Zhu is the director of First Health’s Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) department. She has more than 30 years of medical experience treating patients with allergies, infertility, migraines, stress disorders, respiratory distress, digestive disorders and women’s health issues.

Dr. Zhu’s medical experience, combined with extensive training as a China-licensed medical physician specializing in acupuncture and herbs, provides patients with an integrated perspective in diagnosis and treatment. Utilizing a TCM holistic system, Dr. Zhu evaluates the body’s physiology and works to restore system balance naturally through acupuncture, cupping, herbal remedies, therapeutic massage, therapeutic manipulation and energy work. She works to enhance the immune system to prevent illness. Believing that “the body knows best,” she uses the body to heal itself.

For over 2000 years, TCM has been used to diagnose and treat illnesses based on an individual’s unique symptom origin. A whole body system of care is the center of Dr. Zhu’s practice. When a patient exhibits a symptom, she does not dispense treatment that simply masks it. Instead, she identifies and treats the cause of the symptom, thus rebalancing the body to prevent future occurrences.

Dr. Zhu received her M.D. from Gansu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where for 13 years she taught and served as Director of the Acupuncture Technique and Research Unit. She completed post-doctorate work at Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology.

In 1994, Dr. Zhu was invited to teach TCM and acupuncture at Singman Medical Center in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1999 to 2002, Dr. Zhu worked at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, where she established the TCM Unit at its Integrated Complementary Medical Center. She was also a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba, Israel. From 2003 to 2006, while continuing her private practice, Dr. Zhu served as chair of the TCM department at the Atlantic University of Chinese Medicine in Ashville, North Carolina. She currently teaches at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois.

In addition to her teaching and clinical experience as a Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist, Dr. Zhu has written 18 academic papers and co-authored 5 books on TCM and has taken graduate courses in English literature and educational psychology.
