About Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
The specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is also know as Physiatry (pronounced fizz-I-ah-tree). Today's PM&R doctors specialize in directing and supervising the care of patients who are in need of multiple specialties. PM&R doctors are well versed in both neurology and orthopedics.
Physiatrists commonly coordinate the care of conditions such as: spinal cord injuries; sports injuries; stroke; spine and joint pain; industrial and auto injuries; fibromyalgia; chronic pain; and traumatic brain injury. There are approximately 7,500 board certified PM&R doctors practicing in the U.S.
Jason Gruss, MD, FAAPMR, heads First Health's department of Physical Medicine, working with his team of acupuncturists, behavioral health counselors, exercise physiologists, pain management specialists and chiropractors. Handling everything from acute athletic or non-athletic injuries to chronic long-term disabilities, Dr. Gruss either administers care personally or supervises your care after directing you to the appropriate providers.
