Milton Chavez, MD, FAAFP, will head First Health’s Department of Family and Internal Medicine. He brings to our clinic a distinguished career as a practitioner, teacher and medical author.
After graduating from Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1985, Dr Chavez went on to train at Chicago’s Mount Sinai and UCLA Medical Centers before deciding that teaching and family medicine would become his chosen career path. Dr Chavez has taught family medicine residents the art of diagnosis, patient care and minor surgical procedures for the past 17 years.
Dr Chavez believes prevention should be at the forefront of modern medicine. In addition to treating patient ailments he encourages his patients to make small lifestyle changes in their diet and exercise habits. He also advises his patients to be proactive with annual physicals and age specific screening tests. “These simple changes can vastly improve the quality of life and add to longevity” says Dr Chavez.
He joined First Health because of the opportunity to offer patients the best of conventional medicine combined with the less-invasive, time-tested care offered through alternative medicine. Being in a teaching environment keeps him up-to-date on the latest and most effective medical treatment options available. Yet he has a deep interest in treatments that are not a part of the standard medical curriculum. “I’m excited about the direction medicine is heading,” says Dr Chavez. “We are finally starting to embrace alternative procedures and recognize that they can be of equal, if not often better options in the care of our patients.”
Dr Chavez is board certified and a member of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Society for Colonoscopy and Cervical Pathology.
He holds Assistant Professorships at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and St Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in their Family Practice Residency Program. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
